I found this site from the Yahoo Groups and I registered with it. I wish there was more activity here. I just got my Tech license and I am excited about Amateur Radio, I bought my first radio a VX-2. It is a very cool little radio, but I want to buy something a bit bigger. I am looking at the VX-150, VX-170, FT-60 and the VX-6. I am on a tight budget, so I am looking at the VX-150 and there is a very good 2 meter repeater in my area. I would like to get some recommendations on these radios. I have been reading alot of reviews on radios and there are some negative reviews (it seems there are negative reviews on all radios and all different brands). As a new HAM on a tight budget, I would like to make a purchase of a radio that I will be happy with.

Hi I also wish there was more activity here. Guess the Yaesu's run so well no one needs to post HI HI. I have several FT-60R and they serve me very well. I also use a VX-10 UHF and VHF and they do a freat job too. Keep us posted to how your ham hobby goes and welcome to ham radio. 73 from Group owner KD5LWU

I ended up ordering the FT-60R, and it is currently on the way. I have read about it on eham.net and decided the price wasn't that much more than the single band radios. I still keep looking at the VX-150, hamcity.com has them for $109 with an extra battery. I keep thinkking that it would be good to have one as a backup radio. But I should probably think ahead about getting a HF rig. I'll see what they have at Dayton Hamfest.

You made a good choice. Do remember to use the wrist strap as you use it. Last month I dropped mine sent it back to Yaesu and it was not repairable so I bought another one - a expensive mistake. 73 and have fun with the ham bands Johnny KD5LWU Group owner

I am on a tight budget as well, but I couldn't help using the IRS gift of giving me my own money back to outfit this new hobby to the nines while I could. So, I bought the Yaesu VX-8DR with the external microphone, GPS, extended battery, rapid charger, and high gain tri band antenna. The salesperson at Ham Radio Outlet here in Atlanta really helped me out.
I did all this prior to my test which is this Saturday at the police department in Auburn, GA. I guess since I already have the radio, I now have an incentive to stop putting off taking the test, and actually get my ticket.
Looking forward to the first contact.
