Ah yes, taking us back to 1995! Good HT indeed. Very durable little bugger. I have a friend with one and he loves it too!

It's a nice size, not too small, such that your fingers can operate the buttons, and like the Timex watches... it takes a licking and keeps on transmitting! Have been through several battery packs and luckly I purchased both the FBA-14 AA battery case and the 12 volt DC adapter for my truck! I also have an FT-8500 & the VR-500 ... as you can see I am a Yaesu fan! KD5AEY

I own several Yaesu HT's, the 51R was one of the best ones ever made by Yaesu. I have a VX7, 2 VX2s, a VX6 and have had VX1's,a VX150,a FT50,a FT530 and several others of different brands. I have had and sold all but the 51R, the VX6, VX7 and the VX2's. The 51 R is still my favorite, the only thing I don't like about it is the weight! Bill WA9BA

I love mine also. I am looking for a second one for my son. I might be disappointed by the new models. They seem so small. How does the VX- 7 perform?

Hi Never had a FT 51R but did have a FT 23R. I still have the 23 R but now have/use a VX 7. IMV the VX 7 is a nice radio but have not used it that much in anger. I do get very good audio reports on it, infact most of my friends prefer it to my main rig which is the FT 857 D as the audio sounds better on FM. Don't find the 5 watts a limitation as I rarely use more than 10 watts on FM. No intermod, pager etc problems noted. I have seen this reported in RF congested areas but I live in the sticks about 2 miles from the City of Chester in the UK, so I would imagine I would still get any problems as I'm not that far out. Used the handy recently during JOTA on 2 FM and that was in the City and never had any problems. BTW the size of the VX 7 is excellent, fits very nicely into my hand whereas the 23 R was far bigger in some respects esp with the 12 V battery pack on it. The VX 7 is definitely a lot lighter than the 23R as well. Also I noticed the VX 7 does run hot after extend use but then so does any handi on the 5 Watt setting. The 23R got much hotter than the VX7 thou. I still like the 23R but I think some of that is down to the fact it was my first radio. Odd how a lot of us buy a handi for a first radio isn't it HTH Gary

Much of the FR-51's weight comes from the battery pack, especially if you have the 9 volt FNB-38! However it's the only way to get 5 watts.... and with the distance to the New Mexico repeaters, so times you need all you can push! KD5AEY
