The following link will take you to a page on my web site that describes the modification of the ATAS-120a antenna. It adds a spring under the whip and changes the whip to a better quality whip to keep the whip from being bent and damaged when mounted fairly high on a vehicle. yaesu's OEM whip is just plain cheap for a $320 antenna! www.clarksons.org/photogallery/my_atas120a_spring_modification.htmWiley Clarkson WA5OTR

For anyone interested, I have been able to put together (after many tries) a base spring for the ATAS antennas. I have been using a standard heavy duty SS whip spring for several months on my ATAS-120a and it has really helped take the hits of brush and tree limbs, not to mention low garage doors, etc. I use this spring in conjunction with the spring mod I designed for the whip. The spring uses a modified 3/8" NMO mount so it is a mount/spring/coax pigtail all in one unit, and of course has a UHF mount on the top side of the spring. There are no mods to make to the ATAS. I am considering making these springs and selling them on my web site or EBAY in the near future but I am really interested in if there are ATAS owners who would be interested in a product like this. It takes some hard to find tools (not terribly expensive-just not readily available) to make them so they are not going to be easily made by most ATAS owners. It will also take some investment of funds which are skimpy for me right now so I am trying to get a feel as to whether it will be something I really want to do. I am not interested in anyone ordering etc,-- just want to know if it is something that ATAS owners would be interested in having if it were available. I'll try to post some photos of the mount/spring on my web site in the next few days (as soon as it warms up enough to take some photos).

Do you have any other mods for the ATAS?
